OK GAS case study

The challenge

OK GAS has supplied propane in tanks since 1962 and has invested in marketing for years. The website that had to carry all of that was five years old, and over those five years the plugins in the WordPress installation piled up, causing more and more errors. Pages got slower, campaigns started to perform less well and friction appeared on the website itself. schurq. built a new website that keeps the existing brand colours, aims more sharply at the business market and is fully optimised for visibility on the back end.

Scope: web design & development, migration to a headless architecture, SEO/GEO, a bilingual setup in Dutch and English.

Key challenges:

  • Mounting technical debt: five years of plugins causing more and more errors.
  • Declining performance: slower pages, campaigns performing less well and friction on the site.
  • Speed: the goal was to reach a technically flawless website as fast as possible.
  • A sharper audience: the same colour scheme, but tighter and aimed more at the business market.

The process

OK GAS did not ask us to patch up the existing website, but to reach a technically flawless website as fast as possible. On the old platform that was no longer achievable.

Repairing was more expensive and less effective

Fixing the technical errors on the existing website would cost more and deliver far less than starting again. That trade-off shaped the rest of the project: no repair, but a rebuild on a new platform.

A rebuild on a headless architecture

2 weeks

The new website runs on a headless setup with custom code. No more plugin layer that can break after every update, and an editing environment in Sanity to manage the content.

The same colour scheme, tighter execution

The colour scheme of the original website was kept, so the brand stayed recognisable. The design around it was tightened and aimed at the business market: the four segments agriculture, recreation, industry & construction and hospitality each got their own entry point.

SEO and GEO in the foundation

On the back end, everything around SEO and GEO was handled during the build instead of afterwards. The website is fully bilingual in Dutch and English, with translated URLs and correct language references, so both versions are found separately.

Typography & colour

The colours come from the existing visual identity of OK GAS and were carried over unchanged from the original website. The red carries the brand recognition, the blue marks the informative elements. For typography the choice fell on Roboto, one family for both headings and body text, which keeps the page light and quick to load.
